NEW YORK FASHION WEEK:
PRABAL GURUNG
Spring/Summer 2016

Nepal earthquake

With his Spring/Summer 2016 collection, Prabal Gurung proved how fashion is strongly rooted into society dynamics and how easily and deeply it can communicate with its audience.
The designer, who was born in Singapore but grew up in Kathmandu, has been forced to deal with an unexpected yet heartbreaking inspiration this year: the dramatic earthquake that shook Napal in April.
After the catastrophe, he raised more than $600,000 for the relief of Nepal and with this collection he wanted to show gratitude for the empathy exhibited: “If it wasn’t for the fashion industry, I wouldn’t have been able to do it. Today is about prayer and blessings for each of us here to follow our passion and make a difference.”
Before the models entrance, a group of Tibetan monks, dressed in their traditional saffron and ochre robes, chanted a touching prayer. With this blessing, Gurung introduced his audience to the reflective tone of the collection.

Nepal earthquake

References to Nepal coloured the entire show: rich shades of orange, gold and ochre embellished each piece of the collection, paying homage to the monks robes, while asymmetrical hemlines and subtle cut-outs tried to mimic the shifting earth. We feel touched by such beauty.
